Kingston to Westport, ON - daytrip - Dec. 8 2010

Today we returned to Dorothy's roots, in the Newboro and Westport areas, about an hour's drive north and east of Kingston.  She grew up on a 100 acre dairy farm near Newboro, ON.  Her father, Charlie, supplemented the dairy and grain farming by operating a maple sugar bush on the farm as well.
Dorothy's childhood home - the window on the right was her bedroom.
Dorothy's beginnings were here.  The buildings are much the same as in her day.
The barn still stands although it hasn't seen Charlie's prized Holstein cows for more than 40 years.
Dorothy's grandparents, Edward and Emily, lived here in the nearby village of Newboro, ON
Dorothy spent many Christmas days here as a child.
Dorothy began her teaching career in a small, rural, little red schoolhouse.
It still survives inside these various additions and extensions.
For her second year of teaching, Dorothy moved to the larger village of Westport, ON
where she taught for a few years.  The building is now used as a furniture storage space.
Westport is a popular resort community where boating, fishing, and relaxation are among the major activities. Here are a few scenes ...
The locals call the rock ridge in the background - "The Mountain"

This farm house is fairly typical of the area.  Constructed in 1843 of local field stone,
it has been owned by a family of Dorothy's former in-laws for four generations.
Craig and JoAnn with Franklin
Craig is the fourth generation of his family to own and operate the farm
near Westport, ON
After, our day-trip we returned to Kingston where Dorothy's cold took a turn for the worse.
